Idiom Jokes for Speech Therapy

Do you want to make speech therapy sessions more fun and engaging? Idiom jokes can be a great way to add some humor to your figurative language activities.

Speech therapists love to teach idioms in their therapy sessions for good reason.  Learning to understand and use idioms is an important part of understanding figurative language.  After some explicit idiom instruction, following up with jokes containing idioms will add some needed repetition in a fun structured format.

What is an Idiom?

An idiom is a type of figurative language that is pervasive in our everyday lives.  It can be difficult for some of our students because it is not literal.  It doesn’t mean exactly what it says.  If you say you flew off the handle, you are not talking about flying off of a broom handle.  You are using an idiom that means that you lost your temper.

There are thousands of idioms in the English language.  Learning to understand and use some common ones will help our students with both social communication and in the text they read. Idioms add interest and color to our language and they really can be fun to learn.

Idiom

A phrase that means something other than what it actually says.

Some examples of common idioms are:

  • It’s raining cats and dogs.
  • Hit the road.
  • He flew off the handle.
  • Have a seat.
  • Hang in there.

Tickle your funny bone with idiom jokes. They are a creative way to review the play on words that figurative language creates. You can use these jokes to target:

  • idioms
  • multiple meaning words
  • vocabulary
  • wh questions
  • homonyms
  • homophones
  • fluency
  • articulation carryover
  • understanding humor
  • structure of joke telling

These jokes have a predictable structure with a line to introduce the joke and a punch line containing the idiom. Students can memorize a joke and tell it to their friends or family for repeated practice of what they have learned. Adding humor can really create some engagement with the lesson.

Here is an example of a joke for the idiom “It’s raining cats and dogs.”

You can use this joke to discuss the literal and figurative meaning of the phrase and why a mouse would be afraid of falling cats and dogs. Are there really cats and dogs falling from the sky?  What is really happening?
